Are you thinking of renovating or redecorating your home? If the answer is yes, then you must be thinking of getting your house painted. A lot of people like to paint the walls themselves, since it costs less. If you are thinking along the same lines, then this article is for you as it discusses common painting mistakes that you should be avoiding.
Painting On an Unclean Surface
Never paint on unclean walls. The first thing you should be doing is washing the walls, and making sure that they are dry and clean when you start painting. Remember that the paint tends to stay better on clean and even surfaces.
Painting on Un-prepped Surface
If you are painting your home after many years, then it is important you get rid of the old and peeling paint first. The surface needs to be completely smooth before you apply a fresh coat of paint. The problem with uneven surface is that it prevents from even coverage.
Not Paying Attention to the Tools
A lot of people tend to ignore the fact that there are different kinds of rollers and brushes, and that it is important to know which one is more suitable for your painting job. For some jobs, a roller is better, whereas there are times when you should settle for a paint brush. If you are unsure about what you should be buying, you should look it up on the internet or ask the person at the local hardware store.
Skipping On Tape
Never skip on tape. You should apply it on all the edges that you need to keep them paint free. This includes door frames as well as window frames. Usually, the end result is very messy if one does not use tape. Other than this, make sure that you use painters tape instead of masking tape in order to achieve better results.
Skipping On the Primer
It is important that you prime the surface first as it helps in complementing the paint’s shade. Furthermore, primer can prove to be very helpful if you are painting over a darker color.
Ignoring the Fixtures
A lot of people tend to leave the fixtures. Try and avoid this mistake, take the time to remove the fixture and replace it when you’re done. The end result will be well worth it.
Not Painting the Ceiling First
The ceiling is the first thing that you should be painting. The reason is that it is easier this way and gives a smooth finish. Also, in case the paint drips, you can always cover the surface below.
Painting On a Wet Wall
Remember that your surface should be completely dry. Make sure that the walls are completely dry before you start painting, otherwise the paint will start blistering and painting.
Painting on Rotten Surfaces
Paint is not the solution to every problem. If you have a surface that is rotting, then you need to replace it, instead of painting over it.
Hopefully, these tips will help you out. Good luck!
