Candy, costumes and pumpkin carving! Who's ready for Halloween?
Did you know using pumpkins as lanterns at Halloween is based on an ancient Celtic custom brought to America by Irish immigrants?
All Hallows' Eve, which is October 31st marks the end of the old Celtic calendar year.
Traditionally hollowed out root vegetables such as turnips and potatoes with candles inside were placed on windowsills to welcome spirits of deceased ancestors and to ward off evil spirits.
Who knew?
To ensure that your evening is fun and safe when trick or treating with children, here are a few tips:
- Children should be accompanied by an adult or older children for safety.
- Be sure costumes allow for layering of clothing, in case the night is chilly or wet.
- Get the right fit. Be sure pant legs and dress hems are a few inches off the ground to avoid tripping, especially when children climb front steps.
- Masks can make it hard for kids to see and breathe. Instead, use nontoxic face paint or makeup.
- Flashlights, glow sticks and reflective tape is a great idea to be sure your children are more visible at night.
- Reduce distractions, such as cell phones or loud music to stay alert.
- Be sure to have a healthy and filling dinner to avoid overeating the sweet stuff.
- Remind children not to eat their treats until an adult examines them at home. Candy should not be consumed if the package is opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.
As a homeowner, here are some ideas to make sure that your visitors are well taken care of!
- If you're joining in on the trick or treating, turn on your outdoor lights.
- Clear your yard or porch of unnecessary items.
- Sweep away leaves from your steps and driveway.
- Flashlights and battery operated candles are safer than wax candles on your porch or in your pumpkins.
- Some children have food allergies. Consider giving treats other than candy, such as stickers, erasers, crayons or books.
- Keep family pets away from trick-or-treaters, even if they seem harmless to you.
